Stars Orienteering Club
Tri City Urban Adventure Run & Tri City Spring Sprint
Final Course Setters' Notes, Saturday, 28th April.
Printed copies of these notes will be provided on race-day.
Stage 1: Score-O. After a mass start teams will scamble through an orienteering map to collect the first 3 controls (A,B &C) in any chosen order (approximately 2km). For controls A,B,C you must use the punch cards provided for the race, and use manual punching. At the end of this stage, marked `finish' on your map (control 151 - electronic punching), you will receive the sprint map.
Stage 2: Tri City Spring Sprint (approximately 2km). One team member (only) will have their time recorded for this stage. The sprint contains 12 controls (all electronic punching, the SI system) and is on a sprint standard map (scale 1:5000). The team may still run together, or one team member may run and the other rest and analyse the posted map of the STAR Zone (stage 5).
OPTION: If both team members decide to skip the sprint stage a 30 minute penalty will be incurred for the team.
Stage 3: Transition to University of Waterloo campus. Everyone MUST use the marked overpass to cross University Avenue. CONTROL 14 IS LOCATED HERE, and will be manned. Proceed from the overpass into the university campus.
Stage 4: Back to School, and transition to Columbia. A Special map, named Back to School, will guide you through the University of Waterloo campus in another Score-O (5 controls: D,E,F,G,H, again in any order). All manual punching, so be sure to use the punch card. After this you need to cross Columbia Street at a marked point - control number 15. Please respect the instructions of the official when crossing this road! There may be traffic, and this is a wide road. Any problems and you will be disqualified! Using the same map you will then head to control 16. Please punch the electronic punch BEFORE receiving the STAR Zone maps, and AT THE END of this stage punch number 16 again.
Stage 5: STAR Zone (1.5 km). A special section here with four controls (S1,S3,S3,S4), each of which will be reached through an out-&-back leg from a central control. You will receive your copies of the four STAR Zone maps here. For this stage the teams are ALLOWED to SPLIT up and run legs individually, or they may run as a team. At each control you must punch (manual punch) on the provided STAR Zone map, and return to the start. All 4 maps will be collected here by an official after you complete the STAR Zone. Remember to punch (number 16, electronic) at the end of this stage.
Stage 6: Trails/roads running (1.5 km). Probably the easiest part of the race (with respect to navigation). Again, 2 major road crossings, so follow the instructions of the official at the same point on Columbia Street as you crossed earlier, and then use the overpass for University Avenue. Use your Back to School map to find control 18 (same as 15 on the way up), and then go to the overpass (where control 14 was found). YOU MUST AGAIN USE THE OVERPASS, but you are not required to punch this time.
Stage 7: Run the 'Strip' (1 km) . A specially created map on which you will navigate along a strip of map 1cm wide to collect 2 more controls, 172 and 100 (manual punching), before reaching the finish line.
Please obey traffic rules; cross major roads only at indicated places. Other roads to be crossed using your own judgement.
GOOD LUCK and HAVE FUN !!!
